GTA Construction
Toronto
The three primary types of excavation are topsoil excavation, earth excavation, and rock excavation. Each is defined by the material being removed. The type your project needs determines the equipment, timeline, safety protocols, and cost — and it's the first thing any qualified GTA contractor must assess before work begins.
At Wallace Excavation & Demolition, we've delivered hundreds of excavation, demolition, and shoring projects across Toronto and the GTA for over 10 years. Here's what every builder and property owner needs to understand before starting.
Type 01 · Material Classification
Topsoil Excavation
Topsoil excavation is always the first phase of any construction project. It involves removing the uppermost layer of earth — typically 150 mm to 300 mm deep — before any structural or foundation work begins.
This surface layer is rich in organic matter: decomposing plant material, bacteria, and nutrients. That content makes topsoil great for gardening but completely unsuitable for construction — it's compressible and unstable, unable to bear the loads that foundations and slabs require.
Why It Must Come Off First
- Organic soil compresses under load, causing uneven settlement and structural failure
- Its removal exposes stable subsoil for proper geotechnical assessment
- Eliminates potential contaminants before deeper excavation begins
- Creates a clean, level base for the next phase of work
Practical Tip
Experienced contractors stockpile topsoil on-site rather than hauling it away. Once the build is complete, it's reused for grading, landscaping, or lawn restoration — saving disposal costs.
Equipment Used
Backhoes and excavators handle most residential topsoil removal efficiently. On larger commercial sites, scrapers clear wide areas quickly.
Type 02 · Material Classification
Earth Excavation
Once topsoil is cleared, work begins on the subsoil below — what contractors call "earth." This is a denser, more compact material: clay, sand, silt, or loam, depending on the site's geology.
Earth excavation is the workhorse of GTA construction — used for foundation digging, utility trenches, drainage systems, road grades, and commercial site preparation.
GTA Soil Conditions to Know
Clay-heavy soils are common across Toronto and surrounding areas. They retain water, expand when wet, and require careful management. High water tables can also require dewatering systems to keep excavation sites safe.
Material Reuse
Excavated earth is frequently stockpiled and reused for backfilling, embankments, or final grading — reducing disposal costs on the same site.
Common Applications in the GTA
- Residential and commercial foundation digging
- Trench excavation for water, sewer, gas, and electrical lines
- Road and driveway subgrade preparation
- Drainage channels and stormwater infrastructure
- Site grading and levelling for new developments
Type 03 · Material Classification
Rock Excavation
Rock excavation is the most demanding and typically most costly of the three types. When solid bedrock lies beneath the topsoil and subsoil, standard machinery isn't enough — hydraulic rock breakers, jackhammers, rock drills, or controlled blasting are required.
When Does It Occur in the GTA?
The Canadian Shield underlies significant portions of Southern Ontario. While most GTA projects don't hit bedrock at typical foundation depths, it does appear — particularly during deep foundation work or on previously undeveloped sites.
Budget & Planning Impact
Encountering rock mid-project without prior assessment is one of the most common causes of cost overruns in Toronto construction. A geotechnical investigation before breaking ground eliminates this risk.
Common Applications
- Deep foundation excavation for commercial and multi-storey buildings
- Utility trench work on historically undeveloped land
- Tunnel and underground infrastructure construction
- Sites near the Niagara Escarpment or areas with shallow bedrock

Planning Your Project
How Do You Know Which Type Your Project Needs?
Most GTA builds involve all three excavation types in sequence. A typical residential project starts with topsoil removal, moves into earth excavation for the foundation and utility trenches, and may encounter rock depending on depth and location.
Step 1 — Site Assessment
A geotechnical investigation maps soil layers, water table depth, and rock presence at your build depth. This determines equipment selection, crew size, scheduling, and budget. Skipping it is where projects run into serious trouble.
Step 2 — Permits & Compliance
Excavation in Toronto and the GTA typically requires municipal permits — especially near utilities, in regulated zones, or when altering grade significantly. A licensed contractor handles all of this as part of standard project preparation.
Step 3 — The Right Contractor
A contractor equipped for all three excavation types makes your project more predictable, safer, and more cost-efficient. Wallace Excavation & Demolition handles all three types as part of our full site preparation service, alongside demolition and shoring.

Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions About Excavation
Answers to the most common questions from builders, developers, and homeowners across Toronto and the GTA.
Earth excavation is the most common — used for foundation digging, utility trench work, and site grading. Virtually every residential and commercial build in Toronto involves earth excavation after the initial topsoil removal phase.
The only reliable way is through a geotechnical investigation — soil borings and lab analysis that map what lies underground. Wallace recommends this before finalizing budgets or timelines on any project where deeper excavation is planned.
Yes. Wallace Excavation & Demolition is fully equipped for topsoil, earth, and rock excavation on residential and commercial projects across Toronto and the GTA. We also provide demolition and engineered shoring — one contractor for full site preparation.
Excavation costs typically range from $45 to $60 per cubic meter for earth excavation, depending on soil type, site access, depth, and material disposal. Rock excavation is significantly more expensive. Send your project details to estimator@wallaceexcavation.com for a precise quote.
In most cases, yes. Toronto and GTA municipalities require permits for significant excavation — near utility lines, when altering grade, or for deep foundation work. Wallace handles the permitting process as part of standard project preparation.
In Toronto, shoring is generally required for excavations deeper than 8 feet (approx. 2.4 m). Shoring systems support excavation walls to prevent collapse, protecting workers, adjacent structures, and public infrastructure.
Demolition removes existing structures — buildings, slabs, walls. Excavation removes earth, rock, or other ground materials to prepare a site for new construction. Most projects require both. Wallace provides both services across the GTA.
