This price generally includes the excavator, trucking, and soil disposal. Demolition is quoted separately.
What Drives the Price of Excavation?
The honest answer most Toronto homeowners and builders want is a number — but the real answer is productivity. Excavation is priced per cubic meter of soil moved, and the single biggest factor is how much soil we can move in a day. The more volume, the bigger the machine, the more trucks we can load — and the lower the price per cubic meter drops.
Turn that around and the opposite is true. A smaller job means a smaller machine, fewer trucks, and often tighter access. Less soil moves per day, so the cost per cubic meter goes up.
High-volume digs with clean soil and good access — for example, a full house excavation moving 1,000+ cubic meters. Bigger machine, more trucks, maximum productivity.
Smaller digs, restricted access, or low-production sites where a compact machine does the work. Less volume per day means a higher price per cubic meter.
The bigger the job, the bigger the machine and the more trucks we can bring — so productivity climbs and the price per cubic meter falls. The smaller or more restricted the job, the more the price per cubic meter rises, because we simply cannot move as much soil in a day.
What’s Included in the Price?
When we quote a price per cubic meter, it is not just the machine time. A Wallace excavation rate generally covers three things end to end:
- The excavation machine — the right size for the volume and access of your site.
- Trucking — hauling the soil off site, sized to keep the dig moving.
- Soil disposal — proper removal and disposal of the excavated material.
This is excavation only. It does not include demolition. If an existing structure has to come down before we dig, that is a separate line — and something Wallace also handles in-house, so you keep one team and one timeline.
A Real Example: The Full House Dig
Picture a large home excavation that comes to around 1,000 cubic meters of soil. A job that size sits close to the $52 per cubic meter end of the range — excavation with machine, trucking, and soil disposal included. Big volume, clean soil, and room for trucks to work is exactly the scenario that keeps the unit price low.
Why a Rear Addition Costs More Per Cubic Meter
Now take the opposite case: excavation for a rear addition behind an existing house. The soil is the same, but the logistics change completely — and so does the price.
Here, we need a small excavator that can fit down the side of the lot and reach the back. But that machine can’t reach the trucks parked out front, so the soil has to be relayed forward. That means a second machine — a skid steer (often called a Bobcat) — running the excavated soil from the rear to the front to load the trucks.
A small excavator digs the addition and casts soil out of the hole, while a skid steer carries it forward to load the trucks. On a job like this we might load only four or five trucks in a day — not thirty or fifty. Lower daily production is exactly why the price per cubic meter climbs toward the top of the range.
Access Is Often the Real Cost
Two jobs can move the same volume of soil and still land at very different prices. The difference is usually access. Tight urban lots, neighbours close on both sides, restricted side yards, and no room to park trucks all push a job toward smaller machines and lower daily output — which is what actually raises the number on your quote. It is rarely the dirt itself; it is how easily we can get to it and get it out.
